Luis Enrique
The Spanish sports newspaper AS published the following yesterday: “PSG considers a lifetime contract for Luis Enrique.” This will be a historical first in soccer. And while it still feels like fairy-tale material, it’s no longer totally crazy after Enrique added 6 trophies to his collection in 2025 — matching the record from Barcelona in 2009 and Bayern Munich in 2020.
Sheikh Nasser Al-Khelaifi has already called him the ideal coach for the team. The club is prepared to provide the biggest contract in history — a lifetime contract. And now all we need to know is — does Enrique really need it?
Since Luis Enrique took over in July 2013, the team has collected a total of 9 titles: 2 French league titles, 2 Cups, 2 French Super Cups, the Champions League title, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup. In 2025 alone — Enrique repeated the record of Barcelona in 2009 and Bayern in 2020 — collecting 6 titles.
Enrique was named the best coach of the year in 2025 by France Football and FIFA. Luis Enrique’s PSG did not collapse after losing Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid — they thrived. Young player Ousmane Dembélé (the Ballon d’Or winner) and goalkeeper Alexander Safonov (a FIFA record holder – 4 penalty kicks in a row saved in the final vs Flamengo), both became world class stars during the time Enrique was coaching.
Enrique’s contract expires on June 30th, 2027. That is not enough time to implement a long-term plan — according to the clubs’ belief. They believe Enrique was granted carte blanche to make all major decisions — and that model is working perfectly. Following their victory in Doha, the Parisian bosses seriously considered offering Enrique a historic contract.
However, as AS noted — Enrique may not be easily convinced into a lifetime contract. Enrique is happy with his situation — he is confident in the project — but the concept of a lifetime contract is a restriction on your freedom — it is a wager that in five years, ten years, fifteen years — everything will work out the way you want it to. There are no lifetime contracts for coaches in the history of football. Not even the legendary Alex Ferguson had a lifetime contract at Manchester United.

He signed multiple renewal agreements — and the same can be said for Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. Lifetime contracts are usually reserved for the General Director or President — not for a head coach.
PSG is poised to break new ground here. Or maybe this is simply a marketing ploy prior to negotiating a normal-length contract. There is a very large gap between being able to agree to a contract — and actually signing a contract. Enrique knows this: today you are a hero with 6 trophies — tomorrow you can be out of a job after two consecutive losses. Football is cruel to even the greatest minds. If Enrique agrees to a lifetime contract — it will completely disrupt the entire market.
Every top club in Europe will begin to consider lifetime contracts for their coaches. Or else every top club will realize that it is nothing more than a great marketing campaign for what amounts to an ordinary five-year contract. For now — Enrique’s team is stable — young — and ambitious. Enrique has created a system that can function without a superstar from the past generation.
We’ll wait and see. One thing is certain — PSG has never experienced the best period in its history — and no one wants to get rid of it — including Sheikh Al-Khelaifi, the fans — and apparently Enrique himself. The only question remains — how far are both parties willing to go — and is football ready for a new age of indefinite contracts?
